Beth Shalom Synagogue

The central synagogue of the Jewish Community of Athens. Its foundations were laid in 1935, its construction was completed in 1940, and its first service was held in January 1941. It was designed by Leonidas Lazaridis, who also designed the Monument to the Unknown Soldier. In 1972, it underwent extensive renovation.

📌 Holocaust Memorial: Inside Beth Shalom, there is a memorial dedicated to the Jews of Athens who were deported and exterminated at Auschwitz-Birkenau.

📌 Historical note:

On March 24, 1944, the synagogue became the site of the arrest of approximately 800 Athenian Jews by the German occupation forces.

They were transported to Block 15 of the Haidari camp before being taken via the Rouf station to Auschwitz-Birkenau. On the left side of the main entrance, bullet holes from the German raid are still visible.
