Etz Chaim Synagogue

The Romaniote Synagogue of Athens was built between 1903 and 1905 and is one of the oldest synagogues in the city. It was the first permanent synagogue in Athens and remains authentically Romaniote, following the tradition of this particular Jewish community.

The teva (prayer stand) is located on the west wall, while the ehal (ark containing the Torah scrolls) is on the east side. The seats of the faithful extend along the length of the building, in contrast to the Beth Shalom synagogue, where they are arranged parallel and opposite the Ehal.

In 2007, a major renovation of the space was completed.

📌 In Greece, synagogues are mainly divided into Romanian and Sephardic, with the latter category prevailing in most communities today.
