The Synagogue of the Ancient Agora of Athens

Ancient Synagogue in the Ancient Agora

One of the most important archaeological finds confirming the Jewish presence in ancient Athens is a fragment found at the site of the Agora Register. It bears an engraving of a menorah (seven-branched candelabrum) and a lulav (myrtle branch), elements that indicate its use in a Jewish synagogue.

It dates back to the 4th century AD and is on display at the Jewish Museum of Greece.

📖 Acts of the Apostles 17:17

"Paul debated in the synagogue with the Jews and the God-fearers, and in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there."

📌 These first synagogues in Greece were founded by Jewish communities that later evolved into the Romaniote tradition, one of the oldest Jewish communities in Europe.
